London + Day Trips | United Kingdom

Next up: London! We spent just over a week in the UK. We stayed in London and Hayling Island, and took day trips along the way. In classic London style, it was overcast 99% of our time in the city!

One of my favourite streets to walk down was Regent Street. It is is a gorgeous wide London street which is lined with shops. Just keep the exchange rate in mind – the Australian dollar unfortunately didn’t exchange to our benefit!

Two of my favourite areas were Soho and Trafalgar. One tip about accommodation – stay centrally! For our first accommodation, we made the mistake of staying a bit outside of London. We stayed in Camden and I honestly felt very unsafe in the area. Not only that, but we had to take the tube to just get into town. I would really recommend sacrificing a bit of luxury for a more centrally located accommodation.

We took the tube and walked all around London. I recommend getting an Oyster Card to get around London – it will really add up taking taxis to get everywhere. We visited the London Bridge one day which is fantastic to see. Another day, we went to Buckingham Palace and saw the guards marching. Hyde Park is a short walk away and we wandered over there after the Palace.

London is jam packed with culture. There are a countless amount of museums, galleries, and sites to visit in London. We went to the British Museum – absolutely recommend visiting. Entry was free and the exhibitions were absolutely amazing! My favourite was the Ancient Egypt exhibition.

Another must-do in London is to see a musical! There are so many on at once you’re bound to find one you like. We went and saw Chicago and I must say it was one of my favourite musicals I have ever seen.

While we were in London, we came across a Trump protest along Regent Street. It was amazing to see the sea of people calmly protesting.

The choice of places to eat and drink were endless in London. It was fantastic to visit somewhere that had such a range of cuisines after spending almost 3 months in countries which stuck mainly to their own traditional cuisine.

You can’t visit London and not have some high tea. We went a bit crazy and went to Claridge’s for the Wimbledon Afternoon Tea. It was incredibly fancy and a great experience.

We also went for a drink to the Prosecco House which has a massive range of different proseccos – such a nice place for a cozy drink.

We also took a few little day trips during our time in the UK. We ventured down to Hayling Island for Goodwood Festival of Speed. Lord March holds the festival annually where racing teams come together to compete.

We also drove to the Stonehenge! It was an amazing landmark to visit – it sits in the middle of a field and you can walk around the whole Stonehenge. It is possible to do this without a car but is a bit bothersome as you have to take a train and bus.

My opinion on London is a bit varied. I really enjoyed the city and driving around the countryside but the costs were a bit prohibitive for a student like me on a budget! I would definitely return but either with more budgeted or spend a bit less time!

  1. I lived and worked for many years in London and am now shocked whenever I return by the cost of everything. However, it’s a great place to visit and staying just a 15 minute walk from the centre, say in Bayswater, can lower your costs considerably. Taxis and the tube can really add up but having a day long ticket on the jump-on, jump-off tourist bus will allow you to see all the major monuments. Thereafter, walk or use the bus system.

I spent many weeks as I child on Hayling Island with relatives. It’s much changed, particularly the beaches which were sandy but are now stony.

You’ll be much better prepared for your next visit.

PS Claridges is also my favourite place for afternoon tea
