On one day of our trip to Queenstown, we decided to venture out of the town and down the lake to Glenorchy. It is a beautiful 45 minute drive along Lake Wakatipu.
This is hands down one of the most scenic drives I have ever taken. The lake is beautifully still and surrounded by snowy mountains.
We decided to take the road less travelled and follow the signs to the Earnslaw Burn which promised a view of a glacier. While this was a great little adventure, it definitely requires a 4WD, as the roads are mainly gravel and there are some river crossings. Our trip unfortunately didn’t lead all the way to the glacier, which requires a very long hike, but we were able to reach Chinaman’s Bluff which made the very adventurous drive well worth it.
And with that adventure, we hurried back to the airport to catch our flight back home.

I see you have found Paradise! When you were in the area, did you head to the start of the Routeburn Track? There are a couple of short 45 minute walks in DOC forest and it is truly magical.
