5 Tips to Make the Most of Your Study Abroad

So you’ve chosen to study abroad. First of all: fantastic choice! It’s the absolute best choice I made during my time studying – I ended up going twice. Now that you have made the decision to go, here are a few tips to make the most of your experience!

1. Be open to new experiences

To make the most of this fabulous opportunity it’s great to be open to experiencing different things. If you’ve gone over with a group, go out and enjoy the city with them. If you go by yourself, try to be outgoing and meet people in your classes. Say yes to dinners, trips, events, and anything else that presents itself even if it isn’t something you would usually do – you never know if you’ll end up really enjoying it!

The only thing to keep in mind is always be safe and follow your instincts – if you do this you will have a fabulous time exploring the new city or country.

2. Plan your time well

If you want to get the most out of your trip, it’s so important to plan your time well so you don’t get stressed out about the work you’re actually there to do.

So number one, actually attend your classes – you’re there to learn something at least! Also don’t leave your work to the last minute. Study groups are a great way have fun while getting some work done. Get a group together and go to a nearby cafe – it’s a whole lot better than cramming by yourself the night it’s due!

3. Take weekend trips

Weekend trips are probably the best party of studying abroad. Following tip one, be receptive to taking spontaneous trips with classmates – I did and I had a blast. Although, try to keep out of the country trips for longer breaks instead of squishing them into two days.

4. ‘Staycation’

On the other hand, if you do only have a few days, try staying within your country to get the most out of studying there. Take short day trips or even just stay in your city and explore it. I loved exploring Florence and took different routes every time I went out to discover every street, shop and cafe I could.

5. Learn some basics of the language

It will help you so much to learn a bit of the language. The best words and phrases to learn are yes, no, please, thank you, excuse me, do you speak [your language], and how to order coffee and food always helps. It will help you get around the town so much easier and the locals are always more receptive and happier to help you if you at least greet them in their language instead of just assuming they will understand you if you speak English.

So have fun and enjoy! Let me know down below if you studied abroad or are planning to!

  1. I studied in Sydney, Australia for six months this year and it was absolutely incredible! I definitely took advantage of long weekends and study weeks off to travel around the country!
