Brunette to Blonde in a Day

I have been dying my hair since I was 15 but never have I attempted to do something so drastic. I was getting really bored with my hair and decided that it was time for a change so I took the plunge and went blonde. I had a lot of mixed opinions from family and friends but at the end of the day I decided it was something I wanted to do. I figured that even if I didn’t like it, it’s temporary, hair grows back and it’s not the end of the world.

So I made an appointment for a colour consultation and to be honest, it didn’t go so well. The colourist I talked to didn’t seem interested or enthusiastic and it didn’t make me feel very confident. I decided that I wanted someone who was going to be excited about this change so I talked to another colourist. She was knowledgeable and excited, and she made me feel so good about it I booked the next available appointment. The next week or so was spent feeling both excited and nervous about my decision but I was keen to get it underway.

The Process

One tip I can give is do not wash your hair the day of a full scalp bleach! I wasn’t told and unfortunately this caused a very tingly, slightly burny scalp while the bleach was sitting.

I had 1 full scalp bleach and thankfully that was enough for my hair. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go because my hair is so dark naturally but it worked really well and we only had to do 1 round. That took about 40 minutes of sitting until it was washed out. Then my colourist put 2 different toners in my hair through my roots and ends to make the colour even and blend.

The whole process took only 3 hours which I was very surprised about. I had no idea what to expect and left it up to my colourist to decide the tone – she settled on beige. She was very experienced so I trusted her more than my vague idea of what I wanted! What came up was not what I expected but I absolutely love it.

After this, I had a deep, leave-in colour conditioner put in, it was styled and I was good to go!

One thing to keep in mind is that while this is a one day job, it requires upkeep – roots and toner every 5-8 weeks!

Tips

My top pieces of advice are don’t go cheap with something like this – it’s not the time to be saving your pennies. You want someone experienced and the right products so you don’t irreparably damage your hair. The second thing is have someone you trust do it! It’s a big thing and a big investment so you need to feel confident in the colourist. And don’t listen to other people – if you want to do it, go for it! It’s your hair and you can do whatever you want with it.
